Dr. William Jenkins is a postdoctoral scholar at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego. His research interests include acoustic and seismic signal processing, ocean and polar acoustics, and applied machine learning in the earth sciences. Jenkins completed his Ph.D. in oceanography at Scripps in 2023, where he was a 2018 recipient of the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship.

Jenkins previously served on active duty in the U.S. Navy as a nuclear submarine officer on board the fast-attack submarine USS Providence (SSN 719), and he continues to serve in the Navy Reserve. He has completed tours of duty in Groton, Conn.; Yokosuka, Japan; and Kabul, Afghanistan.

Jenkins graduated with merit from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. with a B.S. in oceanography; with distinction from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif. with an M.S. in engineering acoustics; and with highest distinction from the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, R.I. with an M.A. in defense and strategic studies. He is a recipient of the 2010 Chief of Naval Operations Undersea Warfare Award for research he conducted in underwater acoustic communications, and has received numerous personal and unit decorations while serving in the Navy.

In his spare time, Jenkins enjoys playing violin, traveling, diving, sailing, and skiing.
